Following the spate of flood rocking Osun State, the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola has urged residents in the state to desist from blocking waterways with indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state.
Oyetola said all buildings blocking water channels in the state “may have to give way”. He spoke while inspecting the dredging of Osun River in Osogbo, adding that some flood-prone areas in Ile-Ife would also be given attention.
He urged residents to desist from blocking waterways with refuse, saying flooding in some parts of the state was partly caused by the refuse that narrowed water channels, thereby impeded water flow.
Oyetola said, “We are concerned about the safety of our people, that was why we have deployed dredging machines, as promised, to dredge water channels across the state.
“Dredging is also going on in Ile-Ife. Part of the cause of flooding in these areas is indiscriminate dumping of refuse. We appeal to the people not to dump refuse indiscriminately.
“We are looking at taking down any of the buildings disrupting the free flow of water for the safety of other people.”
