The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for today to Saturday February 23 2019.
The chairman of the independent national electoral commission ( INEC) professor Mahmood yakubu has announced the postponement of the 2019 presidential election after a brief meeting last night at the commission’s headquarters
The postponement was as a result of inec’s inability to meet up with the implementations of it’s logistics and operational plan that has put in place for conducting the election .
In his statement,while addressing newsmen. ” following a careful review of the implementation of it’s logistics and the operational plan and the determination to conduct a free , fair and credible election, the commission came with conclusion that proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible” The postponement will create room for adequate preparations.
However, the impromptu decision was received by Nigerians with mixed feelings.Challenging the competency and transparency of the electoral body.
The presidential election has been rescheduled to take place on the 23rd of February 2019 while the governorship, state House of assembly, and the federal capital territory area council election has been rescheduled to take place on the 9th of March 2019.
The commission set to meet with the major stakholders at 2: pm today at the international conference center Abuja, to present the recent development.
